Shawn Mendes Said He Almost Auditioned For Lead 'Love, Simon' Role

Shawn Mendes could have crossed over to the big screen in 2018 if his schedule had permitted him to audition for Love, Simon, the coming of age story about a closeted teenager, which hit theaters last weekend.

During his promotional circuit for his comeback single, "In My Blood," the 19-year-old pop star stopped by Z100's Elvis Duran and the Morning Show and spoke about the "incredible movie." Asked by Duran if he considered auditioning for the big role, Mendes confirmed the whispers but explained that his chances of playing Simon Spier in the movie, which is based on Beck Albertalli's young adult novel, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, were slim. "Oh yeah, I was," Mendes admitted of the opportunity. "Unfortunately, timing didn't work out. It would have been amazing!"

In the end, Nick Robinson ended up snagging the role of young Spier, the 17-year-old high school student who is forced to come out as gay to his loved ones after he's blackmailed by a peer. "Nick just did an incredible job. It was really amazing," Shawn continued. Love, Simon serves as the first movie to be released by a major studio company and feature a gay protagonist.

Earlier this week, iHeartRadio sat Mendes down to watch fans react to his new track and, let's just say, they were pretty impressed. "Just wanted to write this note before the song comes out tonight and say how excited I am for you all to hear it," he wrote on Instagram prior to the song's release. "I know I've been pretty quiet during this album process, and I just wanted to thank you with all of my heart for being there and supporting me the entire time. This song is the closest song to my heart that I've ever written, and I hope you guys love it, and all the new music coming your way."
