Snowmobilers Rescue Puppies Stranded On Utah Mountaintop

A Utah couple was shocked to find a Great Pyrenees dog wandering in the wilderness while they were riding their snowmobiles on a mountain in Weber County. Holt and Kat Perry realized the dog likely had pups, so they decided to go back the next day to track it down.

"I'm not going to leave any animal on the mountain to starve, especially, it was obvious she had pups," Kat said.

When the couple returned to the mountaintop, they managed to locate the dog and her three puppies and found them living in a sheep carcass.

"They were living in a sheep carcass. She had found a dead sheep, and they had eaten, there was nothing left, just a little bit of wool and a few big bones. I'm sure that's what she'd been eating on all fall," Perry said.

Weber County Search and Rescue happened to be in the area and assisted the couple in bringing the puppies down off the mountain.

"The pups were cold, shivering and wet and just a little ball of ice," Perry said.

The dogs' mother refused to go with the rescuers, so they decided to leave about 20 pounds of dog food for her.

Officials believe the dog was guarding a flock of sheep over the summer but had disappeared to have her puppies when the rancher returned to collect the animals.

The Perrys plan to keep one of the puppies, which they named Polar. The other two puppies will be put up for adoption through a Great Pyrenees rescue group based in Montana.
