For once, we can be glad we’re not supermodels. Because according to new research, people who are more physically attractive are more likely to have shorter romantic relationships and experience divorce than the rest of us normal-looking people. So hotties don’t have as much luck in love as average-looking folks.
For the study, social psychologist Christine Ma-Kellams from Harvard led a team of researchers who conducted four different experiments to see how attractiveness affects a person’s long-term relationship prospects. And their results were good news for all of us with ordinary faces, because it turns out we’re better at maintaining relationships.
Ma-Kellams says the reason the beautiful people have more trouble is that they deal with temptation from all sides, while everyone else is just swiping right and hoping for the best.
“I think attractiveness gives you more options in terms of relationship alternatives,” Ma-Kellam says. “In this sense, having too many other choices is likely not beneficial for relationship longevity.”
So not being a 10 means you have a better chance at finding a love connection. And this is research we’re happy to believe.
